If you've ever gone shopping for a corset online, you'll know there is a lot of choice. Some cost surprisingly little, others look more like serious pieces of engineering, and then there are the ones that sit somewhere in the middle.
So what are you actually paying for?
One of the biggest differences comes down to something you can't always see from a photograph: the boning.
It's what gives a corset its structure, helps it mould around the body and determines how well it holds its shape. And when you compare steel boning with the plastic alternatives often found in cheaper fashion corsets, there are some pretty important differences.
What Is Corset Boning?
Boning refers to the strips of material sewn into channels within a corset. Its job is to stop the garment collapsing, provide structure around the torso and distribute pressure when the corset is laced.
Historically, corsets were made using materials such as whalebone and even cane. Thankfully, modern corsetry has moved on considerably.
Today, steel is one of the most common materials used in high-quality structured corsets, while plastic boning is often used in inexpensive fashion or costume pieces.

The steel bones help the garment resist your body's natural tendency to push the fabric outwards, allowing the corset to maintain the intended shape while it is laced.
Plastic boning generally doesn't have the same strength, particularly when the garment is being worn under greater tension.
That doesn't mean steel corsets are magic, and they certainly aren't a shortcut to losing body fat. The immediate effect is primarily one of shaping and compression. Any longer-term waist-training goals require sensible wear, correct fitting and realistic expectations.
Quality construction simply gives the corset the foundation needed to do the job it's designed for.
Why Does Construction Matter So Much?
Boning is only one part of the equation.
A properly made corset also relies on strong fabric, reinforced seams, waist tape, secure eyelets and good-quality lacing. All those elements have to work together.

Is Steel Always Better?

It's about choosing the construction that matches what you actually expect the garment to do.
